Game Creation Toolkit Resources

Game creation toolkits enable the end user to create 3D games through the use of a point and click system similar to that of a WYSIWYG editors in HTML mark up languages. These programs are 3D modeling programs that large studios and individuals use for game creation, special effects for movies, and even some medical applications for imaging 3D body parts. Most large companies spend tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars on these programs.

Along with these programs companies will design proprietary software to accompany the use and execution of these tookits. Some of the larger or more commonly used programs are 3ds Max, AC3D, and Aladdin 4D. AC3D is an affordable and versatile tool that can generate files for use with RenderMan, developed by PIXAR, and POV-Ray, as well as an assortment of others. 3ds Max is a high end program and is generally used by large corporations and design firms; 3ds Max is highly compatible with AutoCAD and was developed by Autodesk.

Different programs, of course, perform different functions and are more applicable in some situations than others. JavaOne is a platform in which a programmer can use Java pods to create graphics and 3D models. JavaOne is not a piece of software but a stand alone programming interface/language. Regardless of the program or platform being used all 3D toolkits for games have some of the same functions such as Java 3D libraries, widgets, programming for various different platforms, and graphical user interfaces.
